Silvacom Named One of Canada's Top 100 Small & Medium Employers for the Sixth Year

Written by Lindsay Penny | April 05, 2022

On Tuesday, April 5, Silvacom Ltd. (Silvacom) was named one of Canada's Top 100 Small & Medium Employers (SMEs) for 2022. This is the sixth time that Silvacom has been awarded this title, having been recognized previously in 2016, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021.

This award is part of the Canada's Top 100 Employers project run by Mediacorp Canada Inc. (Mediacorp). It recognizes the small and medium enterprises (SMEs) that offer the nation's best workplaces and forward-thinking human resources policies. Winners were announced in a special edition magazine published in the Globe and Mail. The 100 winning workplaces are not ranked in any order.

"We take a lot of pride in what we do and are committed to building a great company that makes a positive difference in the world," says Tom Grabowski, Silvacom's President & CEO. "Receiving this award for the sixth time is an honour. We will continue to invest in our people; they are the reason for our success."

Now entering its ninth year, Mediacorp runs the annual competition, and their team of judges consider how each employer compares to others in terms of workplace culture and human resource policies. They thoroughly evaluate and grade on eight criteria including; Physical Workplace; Work Atmosphere & Social; Health, Financial & Family Benefits; Vacation & Time Off; Employee Communications; Performance Management; Training & Skills Development; and Community Involvement. To determine eligibility, the Top 100 editors follow the SME definition used by Statistics Canada, limiting the competition to private-sector companies with under 500 employees.

Silvacom was previously named one of Canada's Top 100 SMEs in 2016, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021 and the judges offered several reasons for re-selecting Silvacom, including:

  • Silvacom helps employees achieve better work-life balance through a number of flexible work options including remote work and flexible hours - additionally, employees can earn extra time off during the summer months through a formal earned days off (EDO) program.
  • Silvacom increased the annual flex spending account from $1,000 to $1,200, along with extending its coverage to help cover purchases of home office-related equipment and expenses.

“Small and medium employers have the advantage of adaptability,” says Kristina Leung, Senior Editor at Mediacorp.“They are independent and have always served as a ‘laboratory’ for the kinds of best practices we eventually see at larger employers. As new ways of working emerge, such as the growing interest in hybrid work arrangements, smaller employers have the flexibility to experiment and come up with solutions that work for everyone.”
