MOUNTAIN PINE BEETLE SERVICES

THE BEST DEFENSE AGAINST MPB IS EFFECTIVE, TIMELY, STRATEGIC PLANNING! Given the dramatic growth of the current MPB epidemic, its recent establishment in Alberta and current weather trends there is reason to be concerned for Alberta’s pine forests. Although the provincial government is currently implementing level 1 MPB control initiatives a long – term FMA specific MPB Emergency Response Plan (ERP) focused on managing pine is required to help mitigate potential impacts from MPB. Silvacom is currently at the forefront of MPB ERP development and offers the following services:

  • FMA Susceptibility analysis
  • AAC re-sequencing and prioritization of highly susceptible stands
  • Map development
  • MPB spread approximation
  • Forest Management Strategy (FMS) scenario development

Data Capture
As with all analysis, successful management is dependent on reliable, accurate inventory data. Silvacom has taken the following actions to ensure we provide accurate, timely inventories where Mountain Pine Beetle management is required:

  • Our photo interpreters have been trained in the identification of Mountain Pine Beetle through Medi-For Health Consulting
  • Having experience with determining MPB susceptibility enables us to collect additional, valuable information when completing AVI inventories
  • Silvacom’s AVI 2.1 forest inventory process is ISO 9001 certified, ensuring a quality product
  • Silvacom has depth and capacity in our photo interpretation group, with over 80 years of combined experience

Field Detection
Silvacom has made the investment in training our field crews in Mountain Pine Beetle detection through Medi-For Health Consulting. Our field crews can perform targeted, detailed beetle probes. The data they generate can be used for maintaining accurate and current databases for more refined susceptibility analysis.

Log Haul Tracking
Transportation of infested logs through uninfested areas can increase the rate of pine beetle spread if it is not monitored. Truckbase® Corporation can provide services that allow for accurate tracking of infested log transportation to minimize risk to the surrounding forests.
